What is Squeeze pages?

Here is my 2012 list of the best and essential plugins for your WordPress blog . The idea here to build the best list so if you have some alternative plugins you think do a better job or suggestions on new categories and plugins please comment below.  I will then review them, do a bit of research and if appropriate add them to this list.

I intend to keep this list updated, so please comment and let me know your thoughts – If you find a better plugin for a particular purpose send me the link (leave a comment below) and I’ll check it out – Links to reviews, etc would be useful as well.

WordPress SEO by Yoast

This plugin does a lot of good SEO for your site.   Functionality is included for snippet review, page analysis functionality (helps to optimize your content), image titles, meta description, even xml sitemaps.  Here are the main features that it helps you take control of

Post titles and meta descriptions
Robots Meta configuration
Canonical stuff (reduces risk of duplicate content)
Breadcrumbs (navigation)
Permalink cleanup
XML Sitemaps
RSS enhancements
Allows you to edit robots.txt and .htaccess
Clean up head section in HTML.

In the past we recommended the All in one SEO pack, but this plugin offers superior functionality in our opinion and is a must install on your wordpress install.

Category Sticky posts.

Typically category pages in wordpress have only links to articles and no real content – This is not the best for SEO – A good idea is to use a category sticky post which enables you to to choose a post that will actually appear on the category page (above the links to the various posts in that category).

Page Slugs

When you create a post in WordPress it create the url for you automatically – WordPress calls this the page slug and it normally just takes your blog title and converts it to lowercase and adds dash around each word.

This plugin removed common words that add little to no SEO value like you, do, a, can and many more to make the url much for SEO friendly.

Images

Images can and do rank well in the search engines – Indeed Google has a search option specifically for Images – You need a plugin to make it easy to upload images and to help them rank in the search engines.

In order to get an image to rank in the search engines you need to ensure the alt and title attributes are set correctly – Thats what this plugin will help you with.  Also be sure to name your image with a keyword in it as well.

Having a plugin that shows another post on your blog for the user is a great idea to encourage blog engagement (getting the visitor to staty longer and read more of your content).

This plugin does nothing until the user gets to the bottom of the post they are reading then it slides open in the bottom right hand corner and displays another post.  A great idea.

Posts in same categories

Along the same lines this  widget shoes posts in the same category – You can sort by various items and even have random posts which is our favorite feature.

Sitemaps

Its essential to have a plugin to ensure every time a piece of content is uploaded to your blog that Google and Bing know about it.   The WordPress SEO by Yoast does have XML site maps built in, but we like this plugin as well.

Some of the features are support for 50,000 + URL’s (great for larger sites), it’s very fast and consumes minimal resources.

For you coders out there it can be extended with modules (no hooks needed).

Latest version now supports google news sitemap creation as well, multisite support (sub domains, etc)

Anti-Spam

Have a blog?  Welcome to Spam.  They can go hand in hand so you need an easy way to keep the spammers at bay.

Akismet has been the leader for many years and we still think it’s one of the best.

Essentially it will check your comments against it’s own web service to see if comments on your blog look like spam and then catches them and allows you to review them at a later date.

Stats

How many visitors are you getting?  What keywords are they using?  Where are they clicking on your site?  Which pages are they leaving your site?  You need a plugin to provide this information or more correctly to work with your stats package.

For Google analytics we think the Google Analytics for WordPress plugin is the best one out there.

It’s written by the same guy who did the WordPress SEO for Yoast plugin, and has some great features including.

Tracking outbound link and downloads tracking, site speed tracking, place the tracking code in another location, and more.
Basically it ensures that the right data is recorded by Google analytics where you can go through at your leisure and see what people are doing when they visit your site.

Sharing

You need to make it easy for your visitors to share your content to ensure you gain the maximum exposure.

This plugin is a very small, simple and efficient plugin that enables you to share posts via email, stumbleupon, digg, facebook and twitter.

Another good one in this category.

This plugin fixes the problem – It only pings a new post and is smart with the way it handles future posting, to reduce dramatically the number of pings normal wordpress does.

Contact Form

This plugin lets you setup a simple page to enable people to contact you.  It has good integraiton with Akismet for anti-spam on the contact form.

Privacy Policy

Dont waste time creating your privacy policy manually – This plugin automatically creates the privacy policy for you.  Simple and effective.

Redirection

Do you need to manage 301 redirects, keep track of those pesky 404 errors and generally tidy up those loose ends?

Then you need this effective plugin.  It does this task well.

WordPress Super Cache

This plugin is useful to reduce the load on your server – By default wordpress pages must be processed by your server everytime they are loaded – This plugin creates html files that do not require processing – so everything is faster.

Make sure you understand the principles of caching, because if you are changing plugins often and making changes you can find strange things happen.  This is a great plugin but ensure you stop it anytime you are doing major work on your website and then restart it.

Broken Links Checker

It’s vital to ensure you site does not have broken links – This plugin will monitor your blog and report on any broken links.

Secure WordPress

Ensuring your wordpress installation is secure is vital these days.  This plugin does numerous things to increase the security on your blog installs, including ensuring your site is not blacklisted by google, removing malware and viruses in real time, checking for vunerablilities and  a lot more.

WPVN Username Change

Another way to secure your site is to rename the admin account – One way hackers attempt to hack your site is to try and login via the admin site.  If you rename the admin account to another name then this take will fail.

This plugin allows you to rename your admin account.
